AND THOU SHALT KNOW THE LORD

“And I will betroth thee unto me for ever; I will betroth thee unto me in righteousness, and in judgment, and in lovingkindness, and in mercies. I will even betroth thee unto me in faithfulness: and thou shalt know the Lord.” (Hosea 2:19,20) The only way to know God, as promised in Hosea, is to acknowledge yourself wedded to or united with Mind, God in the oneness and onlyness of being.

“When we fully understand our relation to the Divine, we can have no other Mind but His, -- no other Love, wisdom, or Truth, no other sense of Life, and no consciousness of the existence of matter or error.” (S&H 205:32) No person, no living thing, has a consciousness separate from God, Spirit. When thinking of ourselves as reflection only, but not Mind itself, we can not know anything. Can your image in the mirror know anything? Of course not! In order to understand our relation to the Divine, we must start with the fact that we are both Mind and its reflection indissolubly connected together.

“The scientific unity which exists between God and man must be wrought out in life-practice, and God’s will must be universally done.” (S&H 202:3) All that infinite good is, we are. Life, heaven, is our own being.

GOD'S IMAGE APPEARS

“God creates and governs the universe, including man.” (S&H 295-5) Creation is the disappearance of mortal sense and the appearing of God’s ideas. “The universe is filled with spiritual ideas, which He evolves, and they are obedient to the Mind that makes them.” (S&H 295-6-8) God, Mind, thinks and the form, body, appears. This body does not contain the mentality of its creator. It is in fact thoughtless. Soul is not in body, anymore than a sculpture contains the mind of its creator.

“Out of heaven he made thee to hear his voice, that he might instruct thee:” (Deut 4:36 to:) The body, man, reflects your mind or thinking. It is your thought made visible. How important then is it for us to translate mortal mind back into the original spiritual and immortal “In the third degree mortal mind disappears, and man as God’s image appears.” (116:4-5) In reality God's image is all that really exists, otherwise there would be more than one creator.

CHANGELESSNESS

In the book of Malachi 3:6 we read “For I am the Lord, I change not;” Are we looking for change; changes in our profession, business life, personal life, or in our physical body? Will a change in environment free us? How about a change in our government? Will these human changes in themselves bring us to that heavenly presence, experienced as happiness, holiness, abundance?

Christian Science teaches us that the real man as well as God never changes. “The Christian Science God is universal, eternal, divine Love, which changeth not and causeth no evil, disease, nor death.” Acknowledging this unchangeableness as our present reality is the Rock, Principle, that brings us prosperity, health, freedom to love, peace, and contentment. A change in government, atmosphere, or environment, must be found in Mind first. We must hold to the truth that God’s universe is in the nature of its creator. Then we are lifted above fading material dreams. Understanding too that man’s faculties are spiritual. Man, as idea, is also changeless, perfect, indestructible, and permanent. The sense dream is the only thing that is uncertain and changeable, so we must vehemently deny it.

This verse from our hymnal satisfies my sense of the changelessness of God and His idea man “In heavenly Love abiding, no change my heart shall fear; and safe is such confiding, for nothing changes here.” Christian Science Hymnal page 148 verse 1.
